3 job roles understanding tv and film

Royal Opera House Apprenticeship technical theatre

This apprenticeship interests me because it teaches you all about the technical side of theatre. I will be working with lighting, sound and effects for stage show productions. This is the line of work i want to get into and the job i want for the future is a T.V studio lighting engineer or designer. This would help me learn about lighting while giving me a small income and hands on experience with industrial lighting. To apply for this i need to fill in the on line application form and then if accepted go in with my cv for an interview. It is a two year apprenticeship in which you are paid minimum wage, while working a 9-5 shift. Weekend work is discussable with your line manager. I will need to be aware and rad up on health and safety as i will be working with nights and heavy equipment. Also i will need to be aware i am allowed a 30 minute lunch break during the day.

SCD Soundtrack pre production and production.

Worksheet 1

The sounds you could use to represent someone feeling stressed are:
Heavy breathing
Deep sounds
Heavy footsteps
Loud sounds
Panting for breath

I think that watching a film in a cinema is better than trying to watch a film on a tablet on a train journey because in a cinema the walls are soft and layered. There are 5.1 surround sound speakers built in all around you. Also the acoustics in a cinema are better than the ones of a train. This allows you to be immersed into the sound, this makes the viewing of the film better as it helps your imagination and identify what is happening in the film. Where as if you are on a train, the walls are hard and it will eco. This sound quality will not be as good either as you would most likely be watching it from and tablet or phone of some kind, where it will most likely be a 5.1 stereo. This will have a poorer sound quality. The other problem is there are a lot more sounds on a train, The noise of the train moving, and then the sound of people talking and possibly playing music as well. A train can also be less comfortable than a cinema as the seats are rougher and people crowed in to get seats.
In this picture you can see the walls of the screen are soft and the surrounding area is designed to allow the viewers the best possible viewing experience.

In this picture you can see the trains walls are not soft and are in fact hard. The lack of soft fabric and materials means the sound will eco more making the sound quality poorer than that in a cinema.

The clip i have chosen to talk about is the battle of Balins Tomb in Moria from The Lord Of The Rings, The Fellowship of the ring.

The sounds in this scene were most likely recorded in a studio. The drawing and clashing of swords is a sound effect that is edited into the scene after the choreographing is done. The clanking of chains from the cave troll where also most likely recorded in a studio and dubbed in after the motion animation of the troll's scene was completed. The loosing of arrows and the sound of them hitting the goblins also sounds like it was recorded in a studio or placed in the film from a sound effect software or program. These sounds tell us that the characters are ready to fight off the goblins and orcs. Also that the theme is a fantasy based film. If you took away the picture and just had the sound track, from the drawing of swords and the screeches of the goblins and roar of the cave troll. You would be able tot ell that the film already involves fantasy violence and action. The impact they have is exciting as it makes you eager to watch the fight scene and brings you into the film itself.

If the sounds i have spoken about were recorded in a different manner, like on set and at the site of filming, i do not think it would have the impact nor the effect it has on the viewers already.
*********************************************************************************

Worksheet 2

Fun.
Light.
Rushed
Sad

The sound track will help tell my story, as it will have alight mood and sounds for the larp event, but slower and more depressing sound for the guilt the character is feeling.

Live sound will help my production as it ail pick up the action of the larp event going on around the characters, giving it a more realistic feel.

ADR and Foley will help as it will give a better sound quality, Foley will help and be used the most as i can pre record a sound and then time it in with the film on the specific moments. Like a car door closing and opening, or the sound of footsteps on gravel.

Music will help in the opening credits as it will help set the theme for my film. It will always be good at the end of the film, to help show the ending and make it it have more of an impact.
*********************************************************************************

Worksheet 3

Spotting is the process in which the editor, sound director or sound editor, will meet with the director of the film and pick out which parts need either pre recorded sound or sound edited infrom other sources.
Picture lock, is where the picture itself has ended and is finished, allowing the crew to put sound into the film.

A clapper board is used when you plan on putting extra sound in. The clapper board has the scene and the take written on it so that when it comes to editing and adding in sound, you can match the sound to the clap of the board and the sound and speach or the exploasion will sync up.

There are different types of mics that are avalible to use. I used two mics for my production.
I used the built in camera mic, this is a short ranged mic that picks up alot of background noise. The advantage to using it, is there are no cables and you do not need to take time in setting it up.

Next i used the boom mic. This is a medium to long range mic that is good for cutting out background noise and only capturing the sound needed. It is pointed in the direction of the sound you need to record and everything behind it is not captured or if it is it can be cut out in editing.

Clip mic. I didnot use this mic as i didn't have acess to it. However, it is atached to the collar of someones shirt. It is a short ranged mic that only captures what it is pointed at. It is mostly used in reality shows and quiz shows on T.V.

Hand held mic. I didnot use this in my production as it was not appropiate. A hand mic is a short ranged mic that is mostly used in News shows and some live T.V show, like movie rewards and red carpet events. It has to be held close to the face to pick up the sound and it can also pick up wind if there is any.

*********************************************************************************
Worksheet 4
When I was recording sound for my single camera drama, I assessed each location that I worked at. These are my breakdowns for each location.

Chris and Fiona’s house: When I arrived I looked around to see what the sound would be like. I noticed that the walls were hard and they had laminated flooring leaving very few soft surfaces to absorb the sound, meaning it would eco. The acoustics were poor and this made finding a good place to record their speech difficult. However as the first scen requires them packing, twe used the bedroom as the location. Due to the bed and the enclosed space of the room, the soft curtains and clothes over the room, it gave the sound something to be absorbed into making the eco almost non-existent. I did not have the sound equipment I wanted available to me, however if I did, I would of chosen to use the boom mic as it is directional and I can cut out all the sound behind me making their voices stand out more. I used the camera built in microphone, the sound was good, but not the best and as such it picked up a little background noise. The microphone was positioned behind Chris and Fiona, this meant that the camera did not get their faces, meaning I can cut and edit their voices in without having to make them use lip sync. I did not use a clapper board for this scene however, if I did I would of used it to mark when I need to cut and edit the pre-recorded dialog. I do not need a second sound source, as the dialog was film on set.

The Camp site: Upon arriving at the camp site, I noticed that being outside would help as it would give more of a feel to the film, however, it did mean there was a lot of background sound. Again the acoustics were not great but because of the soft ground and tent walls when we were in the bar tent, it made less of a eco, also it being such a open space help that as well. For the scenes shot here I had access to a boom mic. I used this because I could pick up the actors clearly and just enough background noise to make it feel more realistic and thrilling. The sound of fighting and talk of kill goblins and evil creatures, engages the audience more.  I used headphones so I could hear how the dialog and background noise sounded. The sound level of the background noise was a little too loud but after another take it was just right and the dialog was clear. I positioned the microphone above the actors, this made the dialog clear and gave just enough background noise as to not put it off but in fact sound add to the film. Again in these scenes I did not need to use a clapper board as the sound was recorded on set. In this case I did not need a second sound source as I recorded the sound on set and used the natural sound.

Worksheet 5

This screen shot shows me adding the Vocal Transformer effect. This changes the pitch of the alarm sound. I am doing this because the alarm needs to sound older than it is and as if it was broken.

This shows me changing the vocal transmitter settings. By putting the two dials at the extremes the alrm sound as if it has a crackling sound to it as if it was broken like i wanted it to sound.

This shows me adding the modulation delay effect. This allows me to tamper with the sound more, giving it feedback and making it eco as well.

With these settings on the modulation delay. I have given the alarm, a slight feedback making it sound out of date also it echoes out and goes slightly static to add to this effect. Giving a slightly creepy and scary feel.

This shows me adding the revered effect. This will allow me to make my alarm sound like it is echoing throughout a base of some kind.

With the Reverd set at these settings. It has given the effect i wanted for my alarm and now it sounds as if it is echoing throughout a compound of sorts. It also has a slight carry echo as well.

If i wanted to change the volume of the alarm i could do so by moving the line up or down and making the alarm grow in sound and fade in, or use it to make the alarm fade out. Also If i wanted to change the way the speakers work i could use the dial at the top left to change the location of the surround sound speakers.

Getting it made.

As a writer it would be a good idea to have a agent. (Literary Agent)
An agent is someone who gets/makes business deals on the behalf of another. This is good because it means you can get more writing done while your agent is out there finding buyers for your script or a new script for you to work on.

Yes you do want an agent
Deals are taken more seriously if it comes through an agent. As it is seen that you keen business

However you have to pay them 10-20% of your earnings.
Agents mostly chase the big money jobs as that is where the money is made.
Can stop smaller and less known writers from getting scrips/books published.

Commissioning editor.
Alan Tyler. Responsible for: Out of London Entertainment Commissioning
Commissioning editors are like buyers, they search for ideas, proposals and products to buy for the BBC or the company they work for and then get it send on to a producer who can take it further.
E-commissioning, you can create an account and submit your proposal instead of acing to book appointments.

Warner brothers. Greenlit
A producer decides if your proposal is accepted or not. They are answerable to the president of creative development. The president of creative development will change every now and then. One might want to make more romantic movies where as the new one might say we are focusing on actions movies now.

Independent company. How involved will i be. Worried about Error and Omissions insurance

When a script is bought or the idea is accepted. The writer is sometimes given full access and ability to see and help re-write their script should it need to be changed. George Lucus while making the prequels of Star Wars was able to give the final decision on any redraft of his script.

Screenwriters and Producer work together to add to and develop the script to make it more dramatic. They do not have to show it to the writer.

Also if a contract is made and in the contract it states the writer has no say on the final draft of the script.

Errors and Omissions insurance is there incase you infringe on someone else's copyright it is there to help protect you from a lawsuit. Meaning the insurance company will take it.

Single camera drama pre production.

I have two ideas for a single camera drama. Fiary entry.

Idea 1)  I have been working on a zombie Action/mild horror production. I already have a script for this, as well as a good plan. I have the characters made all the way down to their personalities and back stories.

The down side to this production is i will have only a small amount of time to find the costume as well as the right location to film it in.

Idea 2) My second idea, was to do a film about two people going to a larp (Live action role play) Event. I have the contacts as well as the costume and location for this production, however i do not have a script or characters.

Diary entry 2
I have gone with the idea 1. I have already found and confirmed two actors. I have a location and have booked a camera ready for next weekend when i film my footage. I have started my proposal and my fact file. All of my pre production will be on this page. I found after effects good and it could potentially be useful, but at this point i don't know how i would use it for my production. It is going to be an existential ending where the male character Chris will have to choose between a family party, or his up coming L.A.R.P event.

*************************************Factual Folder*********************************

Larp (Live action role-play)

Larp is a hobbie that many people do. It can range from a fantasy setting with elves and orcs, giants and goblins, much like Tolkiens Middle Earth in Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit. Or it can be a historical period in time. Set in the Roman Epire, or the Second World War.

larp gives people an escape from the real world.

Some media representations of larp.
The film role models. This shows larp as a hobby in which  the people who take part are seen to be socially awkward as well as the steriotype look of a 'geek'

Proposal.
            Name. Joshua Bates
Address. Luker Rd  Southend-on-Sea, Essex SS1 1ND
Phone. 0845 521 2345
Company name. Blue Lion Media

Dear Sir or Madam.

I am writing to ask if you will buy the script of my short film 'LARPERS'

The audience is 12 and above as it is contains mild fantasy violence with no blood or gore and one use of strong language.

The concept is this. A couple have a hobby know as L.A.R.P (Live action role play) one is good at balancing the real world with the ‘fantasy’ world they go to. However the Male in the couple finds it difficult to balance the two and encounters a problem the night before the event.

The first act will show Chris and Fiona packing for the event. It will show the problem Chris is faced with and then them going to/setting up at the event.
The second act will show them both having fun and a good time at the event itself. However it will be dropping hints that something is eating Chris up inside.
The third act will show them on the Sunday evening getting ready for the big fight at the end of the event. This is when Chris makes his decision to go to his family party instead and just vanishes from the field.

Thank you for reading my proposal. I hope to hear back from you soon.

Joshua Bates.

Location Race

When I first come out with the idea to film it about the group that I do, Saxe and Sorcery, I knew that I already had a set location that I would have to film in which was Cherrywood scout campsite. After I thought more about what I could do I decided that I could film one or two of the big people there Fiona and Chris.

Cherrywood campsite is one of the places that I will be filming. Even though I am filming there I didn’t choose the location, it is still one that I am using. This is the location that the group normally go to for their events, so because I want to get footage that would look good on screen I decided to there to film because they are comfortable with that place and because I want to get lots of different shots and angles and because it would look good on screens.
Cherrywood is located in Purfleet, Essex on Arterial road.

The next place that I was going to film is one of the people I am going to films house. Their house is in Kent, because of many different reasons I am not going to say where about or give a picture. In this location I am going to film them getting ready for the weekend ahead and then I will also be filming in the car on the way to the event. Most of the filming will be done in Cherrywood because that is where all the important things are going to be filmed.

Risk assessment

There were a lot of things I had to consider to be hazardous to us or the equipment involved on the days that I will be shooting.

One of the first things we had to take into consideration, even before I sorted out the locations, was some of the equipment that the group (Seaxe and Sorcery) used for example their weapons. Even though the weapons are foam they can still be dangerous, if someone was hitting too hard or even if they were too close to the camera and went to hit someone they could hit the camera.

One of the next things I had to thing about was the overnight stay in tents, because I will be filming the group at one of their weekend events, I would have to be careful of the equipment overnight. I am planning to use the storm hut, which they have there, to store the equipment in overnight. This is the safer option because with a tent if it’s too close to the sides and it rains the equipment will get wet and also the condensation of the tent can get it wet and break the equipment. The storm hut is a good idea because the stuff will be dry and because the people that go in the storm hut are very responsible and they won’t break it.

The next thing that I had to take into consideration was the ground of Cherrywood, because even without taking in the weather conditions it was still dangerous because of the hills and rabbit holes.

The last thing I have to be careful with is the weather, because if the weather turns from the worst and rains I won’t be able to take the camera out and also if it has been raining before the event the ground will be slippery and that would be a risk to the players.
